Fiber in Focus: New York Textile Month

As a part of NYTM this year, I’m pleased to take part in Fiber in Focus, a three-day open studio event at TI Art Studios @tiartstudios dedicated to textile and fiber art that gives a unique perspective into the process, material exploration and the sacred space of six textile artists:

Natale Adgnot @natale_adgnot is a sculptor who uses mixed media, including fabrics, horsehair, and thermoplastics, to create fiber and textile sculptures.

Nicholas Cueva’s @gneissyoungman work is a multifaceted exploration of fabrics in the context of visual information and compression, expanding on the texture and pattern of different weaves.

Sandra Giunta, @sangiunta inspired by the natural world, creates felted and stitched sculptural pieces with wool and other natural fibers to highlight interconnectedness and biiophilia.

Kathie Halfin @eclectic_body weaves sustainable materials such as sisal, flax, and hand-spun paper to create tactile sculptures rooted in weaving and basket-making traditions.

Elise Putnam @putnamelise draws on fabric using crayon, dye, collage, appliqué, and embroidery to create exaggerated self-portraits that reflect familiar characterizations of women, such as fairy tale characters and art historical figures.

Melissa Zexter @melissazexter combines traditional embroidery skills with photography, sewing directly onto her unique photographs. Through her manipulation of the image’s surface, the photographs become unique, non-reproducible objects

CAMP Gallery's annual juried fiber show

CAMP Gallery's annual juried fiber show

I will participate in The CAMP Gallery’s 7th annual juried fiber show, “WOMEN PULLING AT THE THREADS OF SOCIAL DISCOURSE: DON'T BE ABSURD” opening October 17, 2025.

The exhibition will explore absurdism, referencing Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, Simone de Beauvoir, Jose Saramago and/or Samuel Beckett. Artists will apply the ideas and concepts in these works to our modern world, through which industry and politics, is still and often dehumanized. Sub-topics include but are not limited to childhood in industrial societies, sexuality, gender, women’s rights, and education. We asked artists to create circular fiber works to symbolize the continuation of hope in our present experience as we strive to overcome a certain sense of nothingness.

Public reception: Thursday July 10th, 5 – 7pm

Visit

You must register for tickets to be eligible to collect on July 11th and 12th.
Registration is closed.  Update: Ticket notifications will go out on July 4th or as soon as possible.

While it is not a sustainable model for artists to give away more than a small fraction of the artwork they create, the fair exists in part to remind the art world that the retail prices within the art market are a fiction for most working people, including artists themselves. This fair brings out into the open what is normally hidden behind smoke and mirrors: that fine art is abundant rather than scarce. When a lot of artists make a little of their work available, art is brought out of storage and into loving homes, enlarging the community of those who live with art and beginning a virtuous cycle of generosity.

Mending Fences at Gallery 1923

Natale Adgnot and Tegan Brozyna Roberts present new textile artworks in the two-person exhibition Mending Fences at Gallery 1923, on view November 8 – 17, 2024, with an opening reception on November 8th, 6-8 pm. Read the full press release here.

In Mending Fences, Adgnot and Brozyna Roberts use textile art to conceptually and materially explore how to pay better attention to one’s surroundings and look for ways to repair frayed relationships. The title of the exhibition references both artists’ use of thread, Brozyna Roberts’ explorations of overlooked details in everyday surroundings like worn layers of paint that accumulate on fences and other objects in the built environment, and Adgnot’s work that cautions against the human tendency to rush to judgment instead of looking for pathways to connect.

Exhibition dates: Nov. 8 – 17
Opening reception: Nov. 8th, 6-8pm
Prospect Series Concert: Nov. 15th at 8pm with gallery hours from 6-9pm

Salon des Refusés at BWAC

Salon des Refusés at BWAC

I will be exhibiting work at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists’ Coalition from Sept. 21st through October 13th.

The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition presents its very own Salon des Refusés 2024.

In 1863, the Paris Salon held its annual exhibition of academic arts. Thousands of artists applied but were rejected and were unable to display their work in the official Salon exhibition. It was determined that their work did not fulfill academic standards of the time. Emperor Napoleon III, who wanted the public to make the decision, organized a simultaneous exhibition of all the rejects in the Palace of Industry. This exhibition included artists such as Manet, Cezanne, Pissarro and Whistler. The exhibition of “rejects” became famously known as the Salon des Refusés 1863.

It is with this in mind that the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition welcomes Brooklyn artists who have received the rejection notifications from the highly anticipated "Brooklyn Artists Exhibition" at BM, to exhibit in our gallery...as it was then...let the public decide.

481 Van Brunt St., Door 7A Brooklyn NY 11231

Exhibition Dates: Saturday, Sept 21 – Oct 13, 2024, weekends 1‐6 P.M.

Tentacular Threads: NY Textile Month IX

  • Kathie Halfin Studio (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Fiber works from my Bird Brains series are part of this group exhibition taking place in Brooklyn during New York Textile Month’s 9th edition.

The exhibition "Tentacular Threads" delves into the intricate relationship between hybridity, the experience of everyday, and the process of making to explore how desperate elements converge to create new narratives and experiences. Featuring artists Natale Adgnot, Frid Branham, Rina AC Dweck, Kathie Halfin, Yudit Katz, Elizabeth Tolson, the show investigates the concept of tentacular thinking—a term coined by scholar Donna Haraway to describe a holistic approach to consciousness. Tentacularity acknowledges the multiplicity of converging and expanding threads of sentience that co-exist together, much like tentacles that allow organisms to sense, feel, and interact with their environment.

Exhibition Dates: September 5th to 19th
Opening: September 5th 5-8pm
Closing: September 19th 6-8 pm

Natural Tendencies at Yellow Studio

The Gallery at Yellow Studio is proud to present "Natural Tendencies," a group exhibition featuring four artists: Tomoko Abe, Natale Adgnot, Allison Belolan, and Christy Sheppard Knell. The exhibition, selected as part of this year's Upstate Art Weekend, will be on view from July 13 through August 8, 2024, with an opening reception on Saturday, July 13, from 4 to 6 pm.

"Natural Tendencies" delves into the complex relationship between humanity, nature, and perception, exploring themes of transience, permanence, and the influence of bias on our understanding of the world. Tomoko Abe, Natale Adgnot, Allison Belolan, and Christy Sheppard Knell employ diverse materials and experimental approaches to investigate our connection to the environment, the fragility of existence, innate and acquired biases, faulty perception, the interplay between the ephemeral and the enduring, and the balance between what is designed and destined. Through their thought-provoking works, these artists encourage viewers to contemplate the intricacies of our subjective experiences and our relationship with the natural world.

Artwork qualified for selection as long as it measured no more than 12” in all dimensions, including framing and any digital media hardware required for display. Don't Panic at Sweet Lorraine Gallery

  • Sweet Lorraine Gallery (map)

I am exhibiting artwork from my Bird Brains series in a group show curated by Francesca Pessarrelli that includes painting, sculpture, textile art and more.

Don’t Panic is an imperative. We must not panic. The world is on fire but don’t panic. Your rights are on the line but don’t panic. We’re entering a recession but don’t panic. Your lover left you but don’t panic. But how? For those who are coping, how? For those who aren’t, what do you do? Take solace in humor. Meditate. Medicate. Make art. Scroll and scroll and scroll ad nauseam. Listen to your therapist. Listen to your astrologer. Don’t listen to the news.

This exhibition brings together thirteen artists from Ti Art Studios whose works address the resilience of not panicking, the vulnerability it takes to give in to the panic, and what coping means in a time of overwhelming distress.
